Kumamoto

Kumamoto is a major city on Kyushu's west coast, it is deeply proud of its greatest landmark, Kumamoto-jo, the castle around which the city radiates. As a key access point for exploring the volcano and the surrounding Aso area, it is historically rich and well worth exploring over a day or two.

Tawarayama Tunnel

Tawarayama Tunnel is a tunnel in Kumamoto and has an elevation of 738 meters. Tawarayama Tunnel is situated west of Kashiwano.

Bungo Circuit

The Bungo Kaidō was a route built during the Edo period in Japan. It started in Kumamoto, Higo Province (modern-day Kumamoto Prefecture), and stretched to Ōita, Bungo Province (modern-day Ōita Prefecture). There were six post stations along the route connecting to two cities.

Kamitori-cho

Kamitori-cho is Kumamoto City's main thoroughfare with a calm, artistic atmosphere, and is composed of a shopping street with a vaulted roof and Kizaka-dori, a fashionable area in the heart of the city.
