Dazaifu
Dazaifu was established in the late 7th century and served as the administrative center of the entire island of Kyushu for over 500 years, the city of Dazaifu is one of Fukuoka Prefecture's best-known destinations. There are numbers of historical sites which reflect to the ancient history of Dazaifu, including ruins of the Dazaifu itself.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Among the hundreds of Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan, Dazaifu's (大宰府天満宮, Dazaifu Tenmangū) is the most important one alongside Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu. Tenmangu Shrines are dedicated to the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a scholar and politician of the Heian Period.
Kyushu National Museum
Located in Dazaifu, with its historical background as a contact point for cultural exchange between the Asian Continent and Japan, Kyushu National Museum carries with it “a new perspective on Japanese cultural formation in the context of Asian history.”
Kanzeon-ji Temple
Kanzeonji (観世音寺) is a temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism. Constructed in the year 746, the temple was commissioned by an emperor in honor of his deceased mother. While Dazaifu served as the administrative center of Kyushu during the Nara and Heian Periods (710-1185), Kanzeonji was Kyushu's most important temple, but its fortunes declined when Dazaifu lost political influence.
Komyozenji Temple(Currently closed)
Komyozenji's main attraction is its beautiful Japanese gardens. Kyushu’s only dry landscape garden with its lovely moss.
Kaidan-in
Kaidan-in Hall in Dazaifu dates from the Nara Period and was one of only three ordination halls for Buddhist priests in Japan at that time, the others being the original Kaidan-in, part of Todaiji in Nara and Yakushiji (now gone) in Tochigi.
Dazaifu Government Office Ruins
Well-known as the “Tofuro Ruins” is a relaxing place for people to enjoy the delights of four seasons! The government office ruins around the area have been restored, and a historical park has also been built. The magnificent foundation stones give visitors an idea of Dazaifu’s enormity!
Tenkai Inari Daimyojin Shrine
Tenkai Inari Daimyojin is an Inari Shrine found within the grounds of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine . It is said that the shrine was built in the latter part of the Kamaura Period to share the Inari deity that is enshrined in Kyoto's Fumishi Inari Taisha Shrine.
Kamado Shrine
Located at the top of Mount Hōman, which has been venerated from ancient times as a sacred mountain, the shrine is dedicated to Tamayori-bime, Emperor Ōjin, and Empress Jingū. The peripheral zone of Mount Hōman, including the shrine, is a National historic site.
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine Approach Road
Tenmangu Shrine is located about 250 meters from Dazaifu Station, and the entire length of the approach is lined with shops that cater to the shrine's visitors.
