Otaru
Otaru is a quaint and small harbor city in northwest of Sapporo. The name "Otaru" is recognized as being of Ainu origin, possibly meaning "River running through the sandy beach". It faces the Ishikari Bay, and has long served as the main port of the bay. The city was an Ainu habitation, and its beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions make Otaru a pleasant day trip from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
Otaru Canal
Otaru Canal, 1140m in length and 40m in width, was completed in 1923 after nine years of construction work.
Otaru Music Box Museum
is one of the largest museum shops of music boxes, orgel, in Japan. The beautiful century-old building, designated as one of historic landmarks of OtaruCity, is full of music boxes in various sizes and types.
Otaru City Museum
he Otaru City Museum is made up of two separate museums: a conventional history museum beside Otaru Canal and a less centrally located railway museum on the grounds of a railway yard.

The city is also renowned for its glassworks, music boxes, and sweet shops that can be found lining the streets of the bustling Sakaimachi street, just a 10 minute walk from JR Otaru station.
Otaru Aquarium
Otaru Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Hokkaido. visitors can see the only harbour porpoises in Japan, as well as a range of other unusual species, including Siberian salamanders and Clione.
