Nikko is the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, where magnificent architecture, deep history and untouched nature merge. Attractions include the Futarasan Shrine, which dates to the year 767.

There are also many famous hot springs in the area. The mountains west of the main city are part of Nikko National Park. This city has been the backdrop of Shinto and Buddhist worship since at least the 8th century. Especially Toshogu Shrine, this lavishly decorated and magnificent shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Kirifuri Waterfall

was another one of those off-the-beaten-path ones as far as Julie and I were concerned. However, in this instance, we discovered the main reason why this was the case was that the All Nikko Pass didn't work for the Kirifuri Highlands route, which was where this waterfall was located

Kanmangafuchi Pool

Kanmangafuchi Abyss was formed by an eruption of nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail.
