Okama Crater

Okama Crater is a crater lake on Mt. Goshikidake. This lake has a special water layer structure unlike any other in the world, with the temperature of the water dropping to 2 degrees Celsius at just 10-odd meters below the surface and then rising upon going deeper. Depending on climate and other conditions, the lake changes to a beautiful emerald green or azure, showing off a rich appearance during any season, making it a symbol of the Zao region.

Kaminoyama Onsen Town

Kaminoyama Onsen is a hot spring town in Yamagata Prefecture located at the base of Mount Zao. The town's origin dates back to the mid 1400s, when legend says that a traveling monk noticed a crane soaking its wounds in the area's hot spring marshes.

Yamagata Local Museum Bunshokan

The Bunshokan is a building constructed in the English neo-Renaissance style and was formerly the prefectural office and assembly building. Built in 1916, the Bunshokan was designated a national Important Cultural Property.

Yamagata Kajo Park

Kajo Park is one of Yamagata’s best scenic locations for cherry blossoms. The row of cherry blossom trees along the east and south moats is illuminated during the peak blooming season. Besides the Yamagata Kyodokan, the park and the surrounding area have many cultural attractions.
