Sendai

Sendai, the modern city filled with Samurai history, was founded around 1600 by Date Masamune, one of feudal Japan's most powerful lords. It is an ideal base for exploring Tohoku, more it possesses beautiful scenery, such as the Hirose-gawa River that runs through central Sendai, and the lush zelkova trees that line its streets. Aobayama Park

Aobayama Park is the site of the Sendai Castle ruins. The tower at the main gate has been reconstructed and creates an otherworldly site next to the approximately 370 somei yoshino and other sakura planted in the park.

Rairaikyo Gorge

11 km natural gorge that features gorgeous trees, moss-covered rocks and a stunning view down to the crystal clear river below.

Selcohome Zoo Paradise Yagiyama

The oldest zoo in Sendai.Here you can see elephants and giraffes, as well as polar bears and hippos through the glass, are fascinating. There are also taxidermy and narrative tours at the visitor center.

Tsutsujigaoka Park

The park is well known for its beautiful cherry blossoms. When spring comes, a lot of people gather and enjoy picnics in the park. There are over 360 Sakura trees, including Yoshino cherry, double-flowered cherry, Higan Cherry and Ukonsaukra known for its flower’s pale golden color.

Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

This is a large aquarium that recreates the abundance of the Sanriku Ocean, nearly 100 water tanks of fish and animals from all over the world. It boasts largest-scale dolphin and sea lion performances in Tohoku, and encounter experiences with animals including the penguin and sea lion.

Hirose River

It is designated as one of the “Nation’s Top 100 Famous Rivers” due to its good conservation status and a lot of environmental protection activities local residents. People can enjoy the natural landscape in a major modern city, and the Hirose River is loved as a symbol of the “City of Trees”.

Sendai Anpanman Children’s Museum & Mall

This is an interactive participatory museum where children can enjoy the wonderful world of Anpanman, as well as a shopping mall full of goods featuring the original Anpanman characters and offering unique services. An entertaining live show with Anpanman and his friends is put on every day.

Akiu Onsen

It is a traditional hot spring that was discovered more than 1500 years ago. It is a nationally famous hot spring resort and is one of the “Japan’s three royal hot springs.”

Museum of Natural History, Tohoku University

Permanent exhibitions at the Science Museum are held at the Natural History Specimen Museum. Various exhibition plans are also held at facilities in Tohoku University and Sendai City.
