The gateway to the Amazon basin is a surprisingly intriguing old city of museums, mango trees, live music and craft beer. it is is an important cultural centre with an historic colonial heart.
Santarém, known as the 'Pearl of the Tapajós', is a city located at the confluence of the Tapajós and the Amazon River. It is an important regional market center, Tourism is an important activity in the region, with daily flights to Manaus and Belem.
The Park also offers one of the most memorable elements of Manaus: the giant lily pads, an Amazon plant with diameters measuring up to 1.8 meters. Known as the queen of the lakes, this giant green pad blooms over shallow and still waters.
But Alter do Chão is much more than a beach town. It's also the departure point for boat tours to nearby forest reserves and isolated communities. The lagoon it fronts (Lago Verde), home to a myriad of animals, can be explored by canoe or stand-up paddle board.
The capital of Amazonia is home to the incredibly opulent (and incongruous) Teatro Amazonas, a host of creative restaurants and numerous jungle tour operators.
Here you can find a rich diversity of wildlife, including a high number of animals that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Many of our Amazon tours in Brazil visit this area as it is known for its raw, natural beauty.

The Amazon region is hot and humid all year round, it is a typical tropical rain forest climate, divided into rainy and dry seasons. The water level is different in each season, which create the different scenery. Generally speaking, the Amazon River has the highest water level in May, suitable for boat trip in the forest. And it is relatively cooler in July and August, which is the peak season in tourism.
The rainy season usually lasts from December to May. It represents humidity and high water level. The average water level is as high as 60cm. You can explore most of the waterways and see many animals that you can't see during the low water period, such as precious birds and all kinds of mammals who nest on the tree. The weather is cooler than the dry season.
The dry season from June to November is the hottest period of the year, the good news is there are a lot less mosquitoes now. During low water level time, many trails through the jungle are exposed, so there are more hiking opportunities; piranhas have become easier to catch too. It is a season that hikers and fishing enthusiasts will love.
